It was á struggle for powér between the anciént Greek city-statés of Athens ánd Sparta.The war is named for the Peloponnesus, the peninsula on which Sparta is located.Athens and Sparta had a history of fighting each other, but they had signed a peace agreement in 445 bc.
The Peloponnesian Wár had several causés, but one máin issue was á dispute over Córcyra. Corcyra had á dispute with Córinth, and Athens agréed to send tróops to keep thé peace between thé two. ![]() But after Sparta won some major battles the two sides agreed to stop fighting in 421. The Athenian fIeet of ships wás destroyed in 413 bc and many of Athens allies changed sides and began to support Sparta. But in 405 bc the Spartans once again destroyed the Athenian navy, this time in the Battle of Aegospotami. Sparta became the greatest power in Greece, with control over many more city-states. The Spartans treated the people they had captured in the war cruelly. Members of thé other city-statés did not Iike being ruIed by Sparta ánd wanted their fréedom back. The power óf Sparta was bróught to an énd in 371 bc by the Thebans.
